It's funny just how similar the workflows are: XPress 9's Reflow Tagging palette is pretty much exactly the same as Indesign CS5.5's Articles palette: QuarkXPress has been aggressively adding EPUB features of late and XPress 9 adds EPUB support. For longer book texts that are meant to be kept, I would suggest sticking with EPUB.

A Professional Edition should be released soon, and this flat-rate product is more likely to appeal to people looking for the Folio tools but not the Enterprise-level features like hosting or user interaction data that's used for marketing purposes. Prices are only available through a custom quote and are subject to a monthly platform fee (to access the Digital Publishing Suite hosted services) and a service fee (to deliver published content to end users). The tools are part of a larger service that Adobe offers to publishers with their Enterprise Edition of the Digital Publishing Suite. Installing the Folio tool set without an account just gets you this palette: I wasn't able to test the Folio Producer Tools because they are designed around Adobe's Digital Publishing Suite, which is a fee-based online service.
That means that these app magazines can also be very big, depending on your content (the first Wired app was over 500MB since it had videos as well as the rasterized PNG pages).īut you're able to do more creative interactive things with the Folio tools than you are with EPUB documents. The Folio tools are not intended to provide a quick path from print to tablet in the way that the EPUB and Articles panel workflow is-you have to design a vertical layout and a horizontal layout to spec for your intended device since each page is rasterized.

These apps are then distributed via the Apple App Store, Android Market, or other venues for mobile applications. The difference between this and EPUB is that what's produced by these tools are compiled apps with fixed page content, not fluid stories with inline images. With these, you can make richer, interactive magazines from Indesign content, much like Wired's well-known digital editions. Folio Producer Tools and Adobe Digital Publishing Suiteįolio Producer Tools are Adobe's publishing-oriented tools for interactive magazine apps. I wouldn't recommend doing video content if you're targeting all devices-standardized interactive e-books is what EPUB3 is intended for-but if you're releasing something on Apple's e-book store, this is a great way of making sleek video-enabled EPUB books.
The only caveats are obvious: EPUB video content is a device-level hack, not a standard, so it doesn't work in calibre or other devices that don't support the video tags in EPUB 2 XHTML.

Looking at the code showed that the embedding was just an HTML5 “video” tag: Rotating the video while playing also worked fine.
